Enter a tested 5-rep max for squat, bench, deadlift, and overhead press, and the calculator sets your T1 starting weight at ~85% of it. No tested 5RM? Switch modes and enter a comfortable starting weight directly — beginners lose nothing by starting light, because GZCLP adds weight every session rather than every month.
GZCLP rotates four fixed sessions: A1 (T1 squat, T2 bench, T3 lat pulldown), A2 (T1 overhead press, T2 deadlift, T3 row), B1 (T1 bench, T2 squat, T3 lat pulldown), and B2 (T1 deadlift, T2 overhead press, T3 row). Every lift is trained twice per rotation — once heavy as T1, once for volume as T2.
Each session you add 2.5 kg / 5 lb to upper-body lifts and 5 kg / 10 lb to lower-body lifts. When you can no longer complete a tier's reps, you don't stall — you switch to a denser stage at the same weight (5×3+ → 6×2+ → 10×1+ for T1) and keep moving. Only after the last stage fails do you reset.
GZCLP is the linear-progression application of Cody Lefever's GZCL method. Its structure looks unusual next to plain 5×5 programs, but each piece exists for a reason — and knowing why stops you from sanding off the parts that make it work.
The GZCL method organizes every session as a pyramid: T1 is one heavy compound lift at 85%+ intensity for a handful of hard reps, T2 is a second compound at a moderate weight for straight sets of volume, and T3 is an accessory pushed for high reps. The tiers cover the full rep spectrum in every workout — maximal strength, volume-driven muscle growth, and joint-friendly hypertrophy work — instead of chasing one quality at a time. Roughly, T2 doubles the rep count of T1, and T3 doubles T2: a built-in volume pyramid.
T1 and T3 both end in a + set. On T1, the final AMRAP is your early-warning system: when 5×3+ only produces the minimum 3 reps on the last set, the weight is getting close and a stage change is coming — no failed max attempt required to find out. On T3, the AMRAP is the progression itself: the weight only goes up once the last set reaches 25 reps, which forces the strength to be built before the load increases.
A novice recovers fast enough to add weight to the bar every single session, and a program that only progresses monthly wastes that window. GZCLP adds weight every workout — the same reason StrongLifts and Starting Strength work for beginners — but wraps it in the tier structure, so you also get the volume and upper-back work those programs famously lack. Intermediate lifters who can no longer progress session to session are better served by a monthly-wave program like Wendler's 5/3/1.
On most linear programs, missing reps triggers a deload and a slow rebuild over the same weights. GZCLP instead redistributes the same total reps across more sets: 5×3 becomes 6×2, then 10×1, all at the same weight. Volume per session barely drops (15 → 12 → 10 total reps) while per-set fatigue falls sharply, so you keep handling the weight that beat you and grind out several more weeks of progress before any true reset. A failed set on GZCLP is information, not a setback.
Starting too heavy
The number one program killer. T1 starts at ~85% of a 5RM — not of your 1RM, and not at the 5RM itself. Starting where the bar already feels heavy means hitting the 6×2+ stage within two weeks and resetting within six, having built nothing. Weight added per session compounds fast: starting 10 kg too light costs you two easy weeks, while starting 10 kg too heavy costs you the whole run. When in doubt, round down.
Turning T3 into a weekly failure test
T3 is high-rep accessory work, not a third strength lift. Grinding all three sets to absolute failure every session wrecks recovery for the T1s that follow later in the week — and the elbow and shoulder tendons doing 45+ reps notice long before the muscles do. Only the last set is AMRAP, and even that stops 1–2 reps short of collapse. The 25-rep threshold rewards controlled rep accumulation, not going to war with a lat pulldown.
Skipping the stage changes and resets
Repeating a failed 5×3+ week after week — because dropping to 6×2+ feels like defeat — is how lifters turn a designed transition into a real plateau. The stages ARE the program: they exist so you keep progressing at a weight that beat 5×3. The same goes for the T1 reset: testing a new 5RM and restarting at 85% feels like going backwards, but the rep records you set on the way back up are the progress.
Confusing GZCLP with the full GZCL method
GZCLP is the beginner, linear-progression application of GZCL — it is not the method itself. The broader GZCL framework (used in templates like Jacked & Tan 2.0 or The Rippler) periodizes over weeks and months for intermediate and advanced lifters. Advice you read about GZCL cycles, max testing, or weekly percentage waves does not apply to GZCLP, and bolting those ideas onto it usually just breaks the session-to-session progression.
